Mavs dominate second half in 87-62 win over Jets

In Game 1 of the NOC Tonkawa and NOC Enid men's Bedlam battle for 2017-18, the Jets took a 37-35 lead into the dressing room before NOC Tonkawa dominated the second half in an 87-62 win at Enid Thursday night.

Wednesday's win improved the Mavericks to 11-3 on the year while the Jets fell to 6-5.

The Mavs started the second half with a 25-7 run led by freshman guards Trevion Lamar and Chris Hamil who combined for 16 points in the Maverick run.  The Mavs outscored the Jets 52-25 in the second half cruising to the 87-62 win.

Hamil finished the game with 17 while Lamar had 14.  Anselm Uzuegbunem and Khobe Austin-Johnson also reached double figures with 15 and 11 respectively.

Dyaire Holt led NOC Enid with 12 while Keenan Ballance added 11.

Maverick head coach Donnie Jackson was thrilled with the Mav performance in the second half.

"It's always a tough game," he said.  "Enid is always a very tough place to play.  It's always very loud and there's always a good crowd."

"I thought our guys really stepped up in the second half," he added.  "Anselm (Uzuegbunem), Chris (Hamil), and Deon (Berrien) really bought in.  I'm proud of the other guys as well but those guys really changed the way things played out the last 20 minutes.  It also helps when you make shots but the ball flowed better as the game went along."

NOC Enid coach Greg Shamburg said, "I thought Tonkawa came out in the second half and made some big shots early. That really set the tone in the first five minutes of the half.  We never got in the flow of the offense because of turnovers and lack of execution in the half court. We were not patient and took to many quick shots and it compounded the problem. We have a lot of work to do over the Christmas break. Give  (coach) Donnie (Jackson) the credit, he got his team to compete for 40 minutes and we didn't.

The Mavericks host Labette Saturday at 4 p.m. while the Jets don't play again until they host Rhema Bible on Jan. 8.
