Jet Basketball Profile: Shelby Black

Jet Basketball Profile: Shelby Black

NOC Enid Jets' Shelby Black is a returnee for the 2020-21 season.

Black is a sophomore guard from Red Rock, Oklahoma.  She played at Frontier High School.

Why did you choose NOC?  I chose NOC because of the close knit athletic atmosphere and it is close to home.

What is your major and what are your career goals?  My major is Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER).  I would like to coach basketball.

What are the challenges in balancing academics and athletics?  For me, it would be time management and finding the time to take care of myself physically and mentally between school and practice.

What life experiences have helped you in college athletics?  I think starting basketball at an early age so competitively has helped make me stronger physically and mentally.  Every year of my high school career I played in the state tournament so that helped me learn to play in high stakes games.

What is different about college and high school athletics? The intensity of the game.  In high school there would be a couple girls on each team who were good players but in college it's a team full of high school standouts and you have to be ready every single game.

What advice would you give high school athletics in choosing a college or university?  I think for any school you have to make sure it's the right fit for you because it is your home away from home.

What do you do in your spare time?  I like to watch Netflix or go to the gym and shoot.  I also love to spend time with my family.
